Step Up For America’s Health Centers – Make Your Calls NOW!
Today’s the day for EVERY HEALTH CENTER ADVOCATE TO ACT! The President and Congressional leaders are RIGHT NOW considering proposals to address federal spending, some of which could literally zero out funding for the Health Centers Program or drastically cut critically important programs like Medicaid. Today, as the first step in the Campaign to Save America’s Health Centers we are holding the first national health center mobilization call-in day. We need you to do two things to make sure Congress and the White House get a message they can’t ignore.
Never before have the threats to health centers been so serious or our advocacy efforts more important. Never before has the timing of your action been so critical. Negotiations that will impact the future of your health center are going on RIGHT NOW and only tens of thousands of calls from health center advocates across the country will make it clear how much we oppose these potentially devastating proposals. Make your advocacy calls NOW and ask your friends, family, colleagues and partners to the do the same.
Suggested Message:
“Do not undermine the successful Health Centers program as you
negotiate Medicaid changes and cuts to the federal budget. The health and lives of our families and our neighbors should not be negotiated away. I am counting on your support for my Health Center.”
TAKE ACTION:
1) Call the toll free NACHC Advocacy Hotline at 1-866-456-3949
2) Enter your zip code to be directed to your Senators and Representative
a. You only need to call the Advocacy Hotline ONE TIME – stay on the line at the end of each conversation to be automatically connected to your next policymaker.
AND
3) Call the White House Comment Line at 1-202-456-1111
a. When you call the White House Comment line it may take a few moments to be connected to a LIVE OPERATOR, but you WILL be connected and be able to leave a message with a LIVE person.
b. Make sure to call the White House BEFORE the Comment Line CLOSES at
5:00pm EST.
Be Aware: when you call your Congressional offices and the White House the line might be busy because SO MANY health center advocates are calling - DON’T GIVE UP – Keep calling until you get through!
For more information about the threats facing health centers and more detailed instructions on how to take action visit the NACHC Grassroots Action Center.

Pilot Telemedicine Project Demonstrates Success
In April 2009, the Harrisonburg Community Health Center joined with the University of Virginia Maternal and Fetal Medicine Program in offering local pregnant women deemed to have a "high-risk" pregnancy the opportunity to meet with a Maternal/Fetal Medicine physician at the University of Virginia through telemedicine at the health center rather than traveling to Charlottesville. Outcomes have been very promising and the University of Virginia is now expanding the program to other localities. Watch as Dr. Christian Chisholm at UVA describes the program.

Welcome Back College Students
Having taught a course at JMU, I know that there are times when students get ill and the school health center is not able to provide the necessary treatment. Naturally, students feel most comfortable with their health care provider from home. Going home is not very practical for many students and lets face it, your loved ones don't want you driving long distances if you do not feel well. The Harrisonburg Community Health Center is here for you. We provide services to persons of all ages. If you are more comfortable with a male provider you will want to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jonathan Moss, a family pracitioner. If you are more comfortable with a female provider, we have several, Dr. Hillary Whonder-Genus a pediatrician who can see patients up to the age of 21 or Dr. Beth Evans who is certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. We also have a pediatric nurse practitioner, Lynette Crull and a family nurse practitioner, Denise Gochenour. We are not a walk-in clinic but we do our best to see people the same day. If you are under a parent's insurance plan we will bill that insurance for you. If that insurance considers us out-of-network and will not pay for any portion of your visit, we can make cost-effective arrangements with you. You can call us at 433-4913 or you can post questions on our blog. We hope you have a successful and SAFE year.
